Weekly Colour Spotlight

Each week, I’ll be sharing a standout colour or eye-catching wallpaper that’s piqued my interest. This week, we’re diving into the stunning archive of Farrow & Ball to explore a timeless classic: Sand No. 45.

The Timeless Appeal of Sand No. 45

Farrow & Ball, a historic paint brand originating from Dorset, England in 1946, is renowned for its high-quality pigments and environmentally friendly finishes. Their commitment to traditional processes ensures that their shades remain both beautiful and timeless. Sand No. 45 is a perfect example of this enduring quality.

Sand is a soft, warm tan with a subtle caramel twist, bringing a cozy warmth to any space it graces. Although it’s part of Farrow & Ball’s archive collection, it remains available in all of their finishes, making it a versatile choice for any room in your home. If you’re someone who loves warm neutrals but wants to venture beyond the standard beiges, Sand offers a richer, more inviting alternative. It’s a colour that provides a sense of calm, wrapping you in a warm embrace like a soft blanket on a cold day.

Pairing Sand No. 45 with Other Shades

While Sand is a slightly richer tone, it pairs beautifully with a variety of other shades. With creams making a comeback and the Irish climate often craving warmer tones, here are a few of my personal favourite pairings:

  • Double Cream No. 9907 by Farrow & Ball: Another archived gem, Double Cream No. 9907 offers the warmth of a soft cream yet stays neutral. This palette is ideal for north-facing rooms that need a bit of warming up. The delicate balance between Sand and Double Cream creates a calming and cozy environment—perfect for unwinding at the end of the day. Consider using Double Cream on woodwork to give the room an extra lift.

  • Cola No. 9918 by Farrow & Ball: This rich cherry cola shade was revived as part of Farrow & Ball’s collaboration with Liberty London. While I initially considered pairing Sand with Mahogany No. 36, Cola’s red undertone offers something unique, adding a fresh vibrancy to the soft tan of Sand. Use Cola on a feature wall to create depth or add a touch of drama by painting your woodwork and doors.
